H1 2026 Global Luxury Retail Overview

Global luxury retail activations declined 12% YoY, with Greater China accounting for the entire decrease. As brands moved away from short-term visibility towards more selective and permanent investments, store openings remained resilient while pop-ups declined. Japan, North America and Europe recorded growth, while the watches and jewellery sector emerged as the only growing category.

Beyond traditional retail, brands increasingly transformed stores, airports and cruise ships into destination experiences, using hospitality, cultural concepts and seasonal activations to deepen consumer engagement.

KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • Retail strategies shift from expansion to permanence. Store openings remained broadly stable at 600 (+2% YoY), while pop-ups declined 22%, bringing permanent stores to 52% of all activations. Outside mainland China, store openings increased 15%.
  • Greater China drives the global slowdown. Mainland China activations fell 27%, while Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan declined 44%. Brands increasingly prioritised fewer, more productive locations, with Shanghai maintaining its position as Asia's leading luxury retail city alongside Tokyo.
  • Japan, North America and Europe show resilience. Activations grew 17% in Japan, 9% in North America and 4% in Europe. Vancouver emerged as North America's leading city, driven by Oakridge Park, while London retained its position as EMEA's top luxury retail destination.
  • Watches and jewellery outperform other luxury sectors. Hard luxury was the only growing category, with activations rising 29% YoY. Beauty declined 29%, while fashion and leather goods recorded a more moderate 5% decrease.
  • The Gulf faces a sharp slowdown amid geopolitical uncertainty. Luxury retail activations dropped 63%, from 63 to 23, with activity slowing significantly from March onwards. Beauty remained the most active category, accounting for 12 activations.
  • Travel retail and cruise emerge as experiential growth channels. With airport activations holding steady despite the wider market decline, luxury brands are investing in destination-driven airport boutiques, duty-free experiences and onboard retail, extending their reach beyond traditional stores.
  • Seasonal experiences replace one-off pop-ups. From Loewe's seasonal retail circuit and Dioriviera's international rollout to YSL Beauté's Lovenude Hotel and Balenciaga's TechWear activations, brands are developing multi-city experiential concepts that combine retail, hospitality and culture
